  • Cy Young gets the win as his Cleveland Indians beat the Washington Senators, 5-4 in 11 innings. It was Young's 500th win. To this day no one else has reached that mark and it's very unlikely that anyone ever will. He finished his career with 511 and Walter Johnson is behind him with 417.

  • Rick Ferrell hits a home run off his brother, Wes Ferrell. Wes would also homer in the game making them to the first brothers in major league history to hit home runs in the same game for opposite teams.

  • The National Football League adopted an annual college draft to begin in 1936.

  • Paul Waner of the Atlanta Braves collected his 3000th hit, becoming the 3rd National League player to do so.

  • Dale Long, the first baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates hit a home run in a game against the Chicago Cubs. It was the first of eight consecutive games in which he would homer.

  • The Philadelphia Flyers became the first post-1967 expansion team to win the Stanley Cup. The Flyers won the cup the following season as well.

  • Liverpool F.C. draw 1-1 with Belgian side Club Brugge at the Olympiastadion in Brugge, Belgium to win the UEFA Cup. Liverpool won the first leg at Anfield by a score of 3-2.

  • The umpires returned to work after a six week strike. Amateur umps filled in for them.

  • Midfielder Liam Brady played his final game for Arsenal F.C. The Gunners defeeated Middlesbrough five-nil at Ayresome Park.

  • Jim Bibby allows the Atlanta Braves leadoff hitter, Terry Harper, to reach base via a single. He would then go on to retire the next 27 batters for a one hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Atlanta, 5-0.

  • The Edmonton Oilers win their first Stanley Cup by defeating the New York Islanders four games to one.

  • The Boston Red Sox retir Bobby Doerr's number 1.

  • Willy T. Ribbs became the first black driver to make the Indianapolis 500.

  • A violent bench and bullpen clearing brawl took place between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles. The brawl was sparked when Baltimore's closer, Armando Benitez beaned Tino Martinez after surrendering a homer to the previous batter, Bernie Williams
  • Mark McGwire hits 3 home runs in a game becoming the 12th major league hitter to have two 3 home run games in a single season.

  • Jason Kendall became the first Pittsburgh Pirate to hit for the cycle in Three Rivers Stadium. Jeff Kent was the only other player to accomplish the feat in the 31 year history.

  • Fred McGriff hit a home run at Miller Park. It was the 40th stadium in which he homered, tying Ellis Burks for the record.

  • Playing for the Tennessee Smokies, the St. Louis Cardinals' AA affiliate, Brad Thompson puts together a streak of 57 scoreless innings, breaking a minor league record. He would fall just short of Orel Hershiser's 59 scoreless innings.
  • At 45 years and 269 days old, Julio Franco became the oldest player in major league history to hit a pinch-hit home run.
