• Fred Toney, pitching for a minor league team in Winchester, Kentucky in the Blue Grass League, threw a 17 inning no-hitter. He struck out 19 and walked only 1. The pitcher going for his opponent, Lexington, also went the whole game. The game took just 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete.

• The New York Yankees committed 8 errors, but still managed to win the game 10-9 against the Detroit Tigers

• Lou Gehrig had 4 hits (2 doubles, 2 homers) and 7 RBI in the first five innings of a game where the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 11-3. Gehrig sat out the rest of the game with a severe cold.

• A 5-4 win over the New York Yankees gave the Boston Red Sox their 15th straight win. They burst out of the game with a 21-3 record to start the season. They would finish the season with a 104-50 record.

• Hank Aaron went 2-8 with a walk and 4 RBI over the course of a double header. Both hits were home runs. One of the homers was of the inside the park variety. The Atlanta Braves lost the first game against the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3, but beat them in game 2, 7-2.

• The National and American Football Leagues announced their plans to merge for the 1970-71 season

• Hoyt Wilhelm of the Atlanta Braves becomes the first major league pitcher to appear in 1000 games. Wilhelm ended his Hall of Fame career with 1070 games.

• Liverpool F.C. defeat Belgian side Club Brugge to win their second consecutive European Cup. Liverpool won the final 1-0 at London's Wembley Stadium. The Liverpool goal was scored by Kenny Dalglish in the 65th minute.

• John McMullen became the CEO of the Houston Astros

• Charlie Lea of the Montreal Expos no-hits the San Francisco Giants in a 4-0 game. He struck out 8 and walked 4. In his next start on May 16th he would beat the Giants once again, this time by a score of 5-0, by throwing a complete game shutout. In that game he allowed 4 hits and walked 2. Lea was the first French born major league player to throw a no-hitter.

• The Chicago Cubs got the 68th triple play in MLB history

• Nomar Garciaparra went 3-4 with 3 home runs and 10 RBI, becoming the first AL player to knock in 10 runs in a game since 1975. Two of his home runs were grand slams. The Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners by a score of 12-4.

• Peter Forsberg of the Colorado Avalanche had his spleen removed in an emergency operation. The surgery took place hours after the Avalanche eliminated the Los Angeles Kings in game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals

• Frank Thomas's season comes to an end when an MRI reveals that he has a right tricep tear that he got when diving for a ground ball. It was the worst season of his career as he appeared in only 20 games, a career low and hit only .221.

• Tony Pena resigns as manager of the Kansas City Royals after the team starts the year with an 8-25 record. Bench coach, Bob Schaeffer would take over the team for the next 17 games before Buddy Bell was given the job. The team would finish the year with a 56-106 record to take home the title of the worst team in baseball.

• The Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Seattle Mariners 1-0. The only run in the game came when Jamie Moyer balked in a run. Moyer went 8 strong innings. Scott Kazmir went 7 scoreless for the win.

• Edgar Renteria made his MLB debut for the Florida Marlins, appearing as a defensive replacement at shortstop in a 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. He would get his first major league at bat more than a week later on May 18.
