Matt Ryan (Matthew Thomas Ryan) is the quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons.
As a high school QB, Ryan had a 52% career completion rate, with a 15:2 TD:INT ratio as a senior. Ryan was a three-sport captain -- football, baseball, and basketball -- who scored 1160 on his SATs.
Ryan red-shirted his 2003 (freshman) year at BC, and entered 2004 as a backup. He made a brief appearance in the 2005 Continental Tire Bowl, completing one pass (out of two attempts) for 13 yards.
In the 2005, Ryan saw his first five starts (out of 10 appearances) and completed 62% of his attempts and threw eight touchdowns, adding five more on the ground. Even in a part-time role, Ryan was 9th among all ACC players in total offense (160.8 yards per game). He completed 19 of 36 passes for a then-career-high 256 yards in a victory over Boise State in the MPC Computers Bowl, winning Bowl MVP honors.
As a junior in 2006, Ryan threw for 2,942 yards, fifth most in BC history, and lead the ACC in both total offense and passing yards. He won ACC Offensive Back of the Week honors after torching Central Michigan for 323 yards and three touchdowns on 32-of-48 attempts, and took the award two other times that year.
His senior year was, like the rest of the 2007 college football season, a roller coaster. After beating Georgia Tech on the road, 24-10, under the power of Ryan's 435 yards passing, BC was suddenly in the National Title race -- with Ryan's Heisman Trophy bandwagon gaining steam. With the Eagles undefeated and playing in terrible weather, Ryan lead the team back versus Virginia Tech, throwing two touchdowns with three minutes to play. However, his Heisman hopes imploded when the Eagles lost to Florida State, 27-17, with Ryan throwing three interceptions.
Nevertheless, Ryan broke Doug Flutie's school record for most touchdowns in a single season (28), and won the 2007 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given to the Nation's most outstanding college football senior quarterback.
In the 2008 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons chose Ryan with their 1st round (3rd overall pick), becoming the first QB to be drafted.
