[edit] Biography
Mark Shapiro has been the general manager of the Cleveland Indians since John Hart left the position in 2001. He has been in the Indians organization since 1992.
Shapiro's father is Ronald M. Shapiro, a Baltimore attorney and sports agent. Mark Shapiro's brother-in-law is New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini.
Shapiro attended Princeton University, where he played on the football team.
Shapiro's tenure as GM of the Indians has been one of ridding the organization of the heavy contracts for the remaining members of the Indians teams of the 1990s, and rebuilding the team. He is mostly known for building the current Indians team by trading overpaid major leaguers for minor league prospects. The most widely reported of these trades was the Bartolo Colon for Brandon Phillips, Cliff Lee, and Grady Sizemore deal with the Montreal Expos (which was facilitated by the fears of contraction by the Expos front office).
