MLB Draft Tomorrow

OK, so no one cares about the Major League Baseball Draft. ESPN2 will attempt to broadcast the first few picks of the first round, but at 2PM Eastern on a Wednesday afternoon, even a diehard fan will find it difficult to tune in. College basketball and football get all the National attention, and rightfully so. Some schools have nationally ranked programs in both basketball and football, these schools essentially finance all other athletic programs within the school, and likely some academic programs as well.

It's hard for college baseball to get attention, once the NCAA Final Four is over, people start looking forward to school getting out, the kids being home and a vacation. College baseball is only televised in the markets in which the school is located, there is no national TV contract for regular season games. Plus, given a choice, would you rather watch a Major League game, or a college game?

Another reason is with basketball and football, the players make immediate contributions to the teams selecting them. There is no minor league system. Baseball is by far a more difficult game to master, and requires a few years of minor league experience to perform at the Major League level. The talent level in other sports is lower, as referenced by high school players declaring for the draft and making a roster, or by a college football player starting, and starring, his first season as a professional.

With the first pick in the draft, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are likely to select David Price, a lefthanded pitcher from Vanderbilt University. Price, a junior, went 11-1 with a 2.63 ERA this season, with 194 strikeouts and only 31 walks in 133 innings. The Kansas City Royals draft second, and are expected to select New Jersey high school pitcher Rick Borcello, the first of Scott Boras' clients projected to go in the first round.

A rule change in affect this season regarding first round draft picks is they have to be signed by August 15th, or they go back into next year's draft. Up until this year, a team could negotiate with its most recent pick up until one week prior to the next draft, or almost a full year. Hopefully this change negates some of the bullshit negotiating tactics agents try on the teams. Now, they can cost a kid a year off his career by thinking of themself instead of the player.

You're most likely correct, but Don't be surprised if the Rays go with the catcher from Georgia Tech. He has a pretty high ceiling and the organization is thinnest at C. I'm looking forward to the Rays getting SOME attention for once!

Give baseball a + for trying at least. We never used to know the names of the non-first rounders in football until television turned up the attention meter

I've said this before...what else can you honestly put on ESPN at 2pm on a thursday...Baseball tonight reruns? Which is basically what the draft will be...it makes perfect sense for both ESPN and the league. More importantly..I wish I could watch just to see steve phillips criticize...how can that man honestly give his opinion about the draft and expect people to accept it, with a straight face...

Considering the pre-draft hype around the NFL Draft, this seems pretty uncared about. When are they allowed to play? This year, or next year? Or after August 15?

Friday I think...MLB doesn't have the same rules, if any. I wouldn't be suprised if there's something, but I think in general, you pretty much start right away... Hypothetically, you could put them on your team right away (i think)...anyone know for sure?

they can play as soon as they sign, but the list of guys that skipped to the bigs without playing in the minors is small (Dave Winfield and Jim Abbott come to mind)

Yeah, it just doesn't happen...its not unfathomable to be drafted this year and play next...but even that doesn't happen very often...that's why guys like F-Her are very rare and incredible records/marks like 300 wins are so difficult

August 15 is the deadline for players to be signed. If they're not signed by then, they go back into the world and can either re-enter the draft next year, sign a free-agent deal, or (in the case of high school kids) go to college. I think the MLB draft will gain exposure now that it's on TV. Maybe next year we'll see the first round and the compensatory round. If the ratings are solid enough, I can see ESPN bulking up the coverage every year.

Also, if a team picks a player in the first round but doesn't sign him, that team gets a pick in the compensatory round (or the "Sandwich round") next year.

I live 45 minutes from the ASU campus and they host a regional final this week and is not on TV either. Your guess is as good as mine, Beast.

Part of college baseball's problem (aside from the whole aluminum bats thing) is that the season starts right as conference play is heating up in college basketball. We're sitting there talking bubbles and RPIs and conference rivalries as teams are starting to hit the diamond.

Worse? Conference and NCAA tournaments take place after the end of the spring semester and right in the middle of the NBA and NHL playoff races. Which is the sporting nation gonna follow this year: the College World Series, or LeBron's first NBA Finals appearance?

No-brainer, ya ask me.
