Lloyd McClendon (Lloyd Glenn McClendon) was born on January 11, 1959 in Gary, Indiana. He made his Major League debut on April 6, 1987 for the Cincinnati Reds. In 1988, his rookie year, he hit .219 with 3 home runs and 14 RBI. McClendon played for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 8 year career.
Most people believe that Lloyd McClendon's best season was 1989, when he hit for a .286 average.
Named the Tigers bullpen coach on October 11, 2005, he brings 26 years of professional baseball experience to Detroit. Served as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates for the past five seasons (2000-05). Served as a coach for the National League squad at Major League Baseball's All- Star Game in 2003 at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field.
Following his playing career, he began his coaching career as the Pirates roving minor league hitting instructor in 1996...spent the next four seasons (1997-2000) as the club's major league hitting coach. Managed Lancaster in the California Fall League following the 1999 season, leading the club to the league's championship. Served as the manager for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League following the 2000 season until he resigned from that post on November 1, one week after being named the Pirates manager.
His playing career spanned 16 seasons (1980-95) after he was selected in the eighth round of the June 1980 draft by the New York Mets. Saw action at the major league level with the Cincinnati Reds (1987-88), Chicago Cubs (1989-90) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1990-94). Was a member of four division-winning clubs with the Cubs (1989) and Pirates (1990-92).
Owns a .625 batting average (10x16) in 11 games during his three appearances in the National League Championship Series...Graduated from Roosevelt High School in Indiana in 1977, where he was an all-state selection in baseball...played baseball at Valparaiso University...Participated in the 1971 Little League World Series and earned the nickname Legendary Lloyd after hitting five home runs in five swings and drawing five intentional walks for his Gary, Indiana team. As a pitcher in that same series, he fanned 12 batters in eight innings of the championship game against Tainan City, Taiwan.
