[edit] Biography
Limas Sweed (born December 25, 1984) is a wide receiver who played college football for the Texas Longhorns. He is currently a senior. Coming into 2007, he was considered the top receiver for the Longhorns as well as one of the top wide receiver prospects for the 2008 NFL Draft.
[edit] Highschool
In highschool, Limas played wide receiver and free safety for Brenham High. Nearly half of his 72 catches (31) in his final three seasons went for touchdowns. He helped lead his team to a 14-2 record and a berth in the Texas 4A Division II Championship game in 2002.
[edit] College
In 2004, as a redshirt freshman, Limas emerged as the starter at split end midway through the season. He played in 11 games and started the last seven, where he posted 23 receptions for 263 yards.
Limas started all 13 games in 2005. He was named honorable mention All-Big 12 by The Associated Press. He finished second on the team with 36 receptions for 545 yards and five TDs. He set a career-high with eight receptions for 65 yards in Texas' 41-38 victory over USC for the National Championship.
In 2006, he started all 13 games and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors. He led the team with 46 catches for 801 yards and 12 TDs (T-No. 1 on UT's single-season list). He averaged 34.8 yards per TD catch and broke Roy Williams' school record by catching a TD pass in seven consecutive games.
[edit] Scouting Report
Sweed entered 2007 season near the top of the list of a loaded potential draft class, with his size and great jump-ball ability making him an attractive prospect. However, Sweed injured his wrist in the summer and that injury would come to end his collegiate career only six games into the season.
Because of the injury and the number of other talented wide receivers likely in the draft pool, Sweed may not be a lock for the first round.
However, even if he is fully recovered, his speed could be a question mark. While he isn't as fast as DeSean Jackson or Mario Manningham or as slow as Maurice Clarett, he needs to have enough speed to not only matchup with, but beat, quick corners and safeties in the NFL and not just have to rely on his size and athleticism.
