- Honus Wagner hits his 3000th hit becoming just the second player in major league history to do so.

- Mel Ott, managing for the New York Giants, gets ejected twice in the same day for arguing with the umpires. He gets tossed in both games of a double header as the Giants drop both of them to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-1 and 5-1.

- After winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes many thought the Belmont Stakes would be a coronation for Secretariat, as only four horses entered the third leg of the Triple Crown. Fans waiting for the first Triple Crown in 25 years would not be disappointed as the thoroughbred won by an incredible 31 lengths in a record time of 2:24.

- The Pittsburgh Penguins use the fist overall pick to select Mario Lemieux in the NHL Entry Draft.

- Eddie Murray hits a home run from both sides of the plate in the same game for the tenth time in his career, tying Mickey Mantle's record.
- Monica Seles beats Steffi Graf for the French Open tennis title

- Bobby Valentine, managing the New York Mets, gets tossed in the 12th inning for arguing a catcher's interference call. He returns to the dugout wearing a fake mustache and glasses disguise. He is suspended for 2 games and fined for the disguise.
