- The Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Browns, 29-4, setting a major league records for runs scored.

- Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock, and Frank Thomas hit 4 consecutive home runs for the Milwaukee Braves, but they still lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 10-8.

- MLB's first ever amatuer draft takes place. The Kansas City Athletics took Rick Monday with the first pick
- The Cincinnati Reds select Johnny Bench in the 2nd round of MLB's amateur draft.
- The New York Mets select Nolan Ryan in the 12th round of the MLB amateur draft.

- Don Drysdale sees his consecutive scoreless inning streak snapped at 58.2 IP

- The number 7 is retired at Yankee Stadium in honor of Mickey Mantle

- The Kansas City Royals drafted future Hall-of-Famer George Brett in the amateur draft.

- The Kansas City Royals draft two future Hall of Famers in the amatuer draft. They took Dan Marino in the 4th round and John Elway in the 17th round.

- The Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees, 18-9 in a game that took four hours and sixteen minutes, the longest nine inning game in American League history

- The Pittsburgh Pirates take a 10-0 lead against the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1st inning. This prompts the Pirates' broadcaster, Jim Rooker to claim that he would walk back to Pittsburgh if the Pirates lose the game. The Phillies went on to win, 15-11 and Rooker organized a charity walk from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh after the season.

- The Houston Astros beat the Texas Rangers, 5-4 in the first ever regular season game where two Texas teams played eachother
- Damion Easley hits for the cycle becoming the 9th player in Detroit Tigers history to do so and the first since Travis Fryman did it for the club in 1993

- Alex Rodriguez hits his 400th career homerun becoming the youngest player in the history of the game to reach the milestone at 29 years and 316 days old.
