  • Babe Ruth smacks two homers against the Philadelphia Athletics to set a Major League record of 8 home runs in 6 games.
  • 17-year-old Aurthur Porto catches a foul ball off the bat of Hack Wilson during a game between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field. When confronted by an usher demanding the ball back because "the Cubs cannot afford to let customers walk off with their baseballs", Porto refuses to give the ball back. Subsequently, the teen is arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. On the following day during a hearing on the matter, the judge issues a landmark decision: "any ball hit into the stands belongs to the boy who grabs it." All charges against Arthur Porto are dropped.

  • Pirates' shortstop Arky Vaughan hits for the cycle in a 15-3 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

  • Joe DiMaggio connects for 2 home runs in the 5th inning of an 18-11 victory over the Chicago White Sox. DiMaggio becomes just the 5th player in MLB history to hit 2 home runs in a single inning.

  • Jackie Robinson stole home for the first time in his career. He would accomplish the feat 18 more times before his retirement.

  • Bob Watson of the Houston Astros hits for the cycle in a 6-5 win over the San Francisco Giants.

  • Boston Red Sox Hall-of-Famer Carl Yastrzemski collects his 1,500th career RBI in a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.

  • Milwaukee's Don Sutton becomes the 8th MLB pitcher to record 3,000 career srtikeouts as he fans Alan Bannister in the 8th inning of a 3-2 victory over the Indians.

  • Hall-of-Fame secondbaseman Joe Morgan hits the 265th home run of his career, an all-time MLB record for secondbasemen.

  • MLB speedster Vince Coleman breaks Davey Lopes' MLB record for consecutive successful steals with his 39th and 40th straight swipe in a loss to the Pirates.

  • MLB Hall-of-Famer Dave Winfield hits for the cycle for the California Angels in a 9-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. The cycle (part of a 5-for-5 effort) makes Winfield (39) the oldest player in MLB history to accomplish the feat.

  • New York Yankees pitcher Steve Howe is permanently banned from baseball by Commissioner Fay Vincent for repeated violations of the league's substance abuse policies.
  • Portland became the first city outside of New York to host the NBA draft. With the first pick in the draft, the Orlando Magic select 7'1" center Shaquille O'Neal from LSU.

  • MLB Hall-of-Famer Carlton Fisk breaks Bob Boone's record for games caught with 2,226. It will the final Major League game in Fisk's career.
