- Charley Radbourn, pitching for the Cincinnati Reds, becomes the 4th player in major league history to win his 300th game. He accomplished the feat in just 11 years after completing 489 of the 503 games he started. He won 59 games in 1884.

- Les Bell hits 3 home runs and a triple, but his Boston Braves still lose the game, 20-12 to the Cincinnati Reds

- Babe Ruth announces his retirement

- The NHL announced that the Art Ross Trophy would be awarded annually to the Legue's scoring leader. Elmer Lach of the Montreal Canadiens was the first winner with 61 points in 1947-48.

- The Philadelphia Phillies hit 5 home runs in the 8th inning to beat the Cincinnati Reds, 12-3

- Randy Johnson becomes the first Seattle Mariners hurler to toss a no-hitter. He beats the Detroit Tigers, 2-0.

- Arsenal manager George Graham allowed defender Gus Caesar to join Cambridge United in a free transfer.

- Darryl Kile ties a major league record by hitting four batters

- Rick Aguilera notched his 300th career save as his Chicago Cubs hosted the Detroit Tigers for the first time since the 1945 World Series and beat them 2-0

- The Pittsburgh Penguins play the Detroit Red Wings in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, marking the latest game ever played by the Penguins. Previously, the latest game of the season was played on June 1, 1992 when the Penguins beat the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Cup.

- Lou Gehrig died of a disease that would eventually be named after him at the age of 38. The Hall of Famer was one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He finished with a .340/.447/.632 career line.

- University of Iowa football legend and Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick, while on a routine training flight during World War II, is forced to abandon his aircraft when it developed engine trouble. There was no trace of the plane or of Kinnick. His body was never recovered.
