- Red Sox rookie outfielder Gene Stephens becomes the only American League player to get three hits in one inning. The outburst takes place in a 17-run 7th inning of a 23-3 shellacking of the Detroit Tigers.

- The U.S. Supreme Court upholds a lower court's ruling in the Curt Flood case, opening the door to salary arbitration (which is greed to at season's end by the owners). As a result, free agency changes forever.
