- Christy Mathewson pitches his second career no hitter to help the New York Giants beat the Chicago Cubs, 1-0.

- The New York Giants beat the Chicago Cubs, 3-2. Christy Mathewson, the winning pitcher, notched his 300th career win.

- Babe Ruth pitches 5 innings and hits 2 home runs to help the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers, 11-8

- Bob Meusel, New York Yankees outfielder, charges the mound after Detroit Tigers hurler, Bert Cole hit him in the back. The resulting fight included players, fans, and police. It would last nearly 30 minutes and the umpire would be forced to forfeit the game to New York, 10-6 when he is unable to clear the feild.

- The New York Yankees retire the number 3 in honor of Babe Ruth

- Ted Williams becomes the first American Leaguer to have 2 three home run games in the same season. He 3 shots and 5 RBI helped theBoston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians, 9-3.

- Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Ron Cey, and Bill Russell play together for the first time. The Los Angeles Dodgers infield would play for 8.5 years together.

- The Pittsburgh Penguins declared bankruptcy and the doors of the Civic Arena were padlocked by the IRS.

- Johnny Wilson was named as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

- The NHL Board of Governors unanimously agreed to a merger of the Cleveland Barons and the Minnesota North Stars.
- The Pittsburgh Penguins obtained Randy Carlyle and George Ferguson from the Toronto Maple Leafs for Dave Burrows.

- Pete Rose hits a double for his 4000th career hit.

- Chicago Cubs second baseman, Ryne Sandberg suddenly retires.

- Vladimir Konstantinov and Viacheslav Fetisov, both of the Detroit Red Wings, were severely injured in a car accident.

- The Los Angeles Dodgers turn a triple play. It was the first triple play in Dodger Stadium history.
- Javy Lopez and Andruw Jones hit back to back homers in consecutive innings becoming just the 4th duo in history to accomplish the feat.
- Former Arsenal goal-scoring record holder Ian Wright signed for West Ham United.

- Omar Olivares hits four Arizona Diamondbacks' players, tying a major league record. He was the 19th in history to do so, but the second pitcher on his team to do so in the last 3 weeks as Anaheim Angels' hurler, Steve Sparks also hit four batters on May 22.

- The Detroit Red Wings won their 10th Stanley Cup. After the game, Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman announced his retirement.

- Roger Clemens becomes the 21st pitcher to record his 300th win. He helped the New York Yankees beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-2 with 6.7 IP. In the same game he also became just the 3rd player in history to record 4000 strikeouts joining Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton
