- Pitching for the Chicago White Sox, Bill Dietrich no-hits the St. Louis Browns and gets the win in an 8-0 victory

- Mel Ott hits his 400th career home run and scores his 1500th run to help the New York Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds, 3-2.

- California Angels pitcher, Nolan Ryan tosses his 4th career no-hitter and earns his 100th career win when he beats the Baltimore Orioles, 1-0

- Cleveland Indians hurler, Dennis Eckersley allows a home run to Ruppert Jones of the Seattle Mariners. The hit breaks up Eckersly's streak of 22.1 consecutive no-hit innings, falling just 2/3 of an inning short of the major league record held by Cy Young

- Phil Niekro, pitching for the Cleveland Indians, gets a win over the Detroit Tigers giving the Neikro brothers (Phil and Joe Nekro) 530 combined victories, enough to pass Gaylord Perry and Jim Perry for the most by a pair of brothers.

- Joe Garagiola Jr. is named the first general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks

- Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman, Jose Castillo, has his homerun streak snapped at 5 consecutive games. He misses a home run by less than 6 inches when he knocked a double off the top of the wall in the bottom of the 9th inning.
