  • Uruguay defeats Argentina 4-2 to win the first FIFA World Cup. The final match was played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay.

  • England defeat West Germany 4-2 after extra time to win the FIFA World Cup. This was England's first World Title. The final match was played at Wembley Stadium in London, England.

  • American Bruce Jenner captures the gold medal in the decathlon at the Montreal Olympics.

  • American Lance Armstrong wins his third consecutive Tour de France.

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins select Sidney Crosby first overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

  • Willie McCovey made his MLB debut for the San Francisco Giants. He was 4-4 with 2 triples, 2 RBI, and 3 runs while batting 3rd and playing 1st to help beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-2.
