Born on May 22, 1966 in Pueblo Viejo, Azua (Dominican Republic), Jose Mesa (Jose Ramon Nova Mesa) played for the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies over the course of his 18 year career. Mesa broke into the bigs on September 10, 1987 with the Baltimore Orioles, and put up a 5.97 ERA in 123.2 innings pitched in 1991, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Jose Mesa's best season was 1995, when he posted a 1.12 ERA, notched 46 saves and struck out 58 batters.
