[edit] Biography

John David Carlson is a former tight end for the University of Notre Dame football team. After graduating from Litchfield High School in Litchfield, Minnesota, Carlson attended Notre Dame and played on the basketball team. He did not see any action in as a football player, and played 2 games on the hardwood in January of 2003.

In his second season, Carlson played in all 12 games, including starts against Navy and Stanford. He caught 6 passes for 31 yards. He was mainly used for special teams purposes, as Anthony Fasano took the starting tight end spot.

In 2005, Carlson once again played in all 12 games, and even started in 6. He continued to be a key contributor on special teams, and even won special teams player of the week against Michigan State, which included a forced fumble. That season he caught 7 passes for 56 yards, and his first collegiate touchdown, a 22 yard catch against Purdue.

The 2006 season saw him move to the starting tight end spot once Fasano went to the NFL. It was then his potential by draft scouts everywhere was seen. He finished the year with a career high of 47 catches for 734 yards, good for 13.5 yards per catch, and 4 TD's. He started in 10 games before missing the rest of the season with an injury. Carlson also had a career high 62 yard touchdown grab at Michigan State.

His final year of eligibility saw a drop in productivity at the same time the QB play had dropped significantly. Carlson had 40 catches, but for 372 yards and 3 TD's.

He will enter the 2008 NFL Draft, where he is projected by many to be one of the top prospects in the tight end position.
