Joe Theismann (Joseph Robert Theismann) was born on September 9, 1949 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. After going to high school at South River (NJ), Theismann attended the University of Notre Dame. Theismann made his professional debut in the NFL in 1974 with the Washington Redskins. He played for the Washington Redskins for his entire 12 year career.

Most people believe that 1983 was Joe Theismann's best year, as he threw for 3714 yards, tossed 29 TDs and put up a 97 passer rating.

Theismann will however be known for being the recipient of one of the worst injuries in NFL history. On Monday Night Football against the New York Giants, a live telecast, Theismann was sacked by Lawrence Taylor. He was put in an awkward position and his leg snapped from the knee below. It was so loud you could hear it on the television. Taylor immediately called for medical staff to help him, and Theismann's career was never the same afterwards.
