Joe Abbey (Joseph Reed Abbey) was born on March 21, 1925 in Denton, Texas. After going to high school at Denton (TX), Abbey attended the University of North Texas and the University of Texas. Abbey made his professional debut in the NFL in 1948 with the Chicago Bears. He played for the New York Bulldogs and Chicago Bears over the course of his 2 year career.

Most people believe that 1949 was Joe Abbey's best year.
