Jimmy Patton (James Russell Patton) was born on September 29, 1933 in Greenville, Mississippi. After going to high school at E.E. Bass (Greenville, MS), Patton attended the University of Mississippi. Patton made his professional debut in the NFL in 1955 with the New York Giants. He played for the New York Giants for his entire 12 year career.

A smart, very athletic safety, Patton was the Giants perennial interception leader and won All-Pro honors six times (1958-1963) and was the signal caller for the Giant's DB's that included hall of famer Emlin Tunnel and future 49'er coach Dick Nolan. An enduring image of Patton was during the 1958 overtime championship game against the Colts of him trying, in vain, to stop Alan Ameche from scoring the winning touchdown.

Sadly, Jim was killed in a one-car crash in Georgia driving to see his sister, who was dying of Cancer, in 1973.

Most people believe that 1958 was Jimmy Patton's best year, as he picked off 11 passes.
