[edit] Biography

In 1991 a young defenseman named Jim Paek got a chance to play in the NHL. The Pens recalled him from Muskegon Lumberjacks of the IHL late in the season. He impressed coach "Badger" Bob Johnson enough that he saw considerable action in the playoffs that year. The Penguins went on to win the Stanley Cup. Paek not only became the first Korean player ever to play in the NHL but the first Korean to win the Stanley Cup. His Pittsburgh Penguin jersey hangs in the Hockey Hall of Fame honoring this feat.

In Paek's second season with the Pens he appeared in 72 games. He scored 3 goals and assisted on 15 for 18 points. These are all career highs for Paek in the NHL. During the 1992 playoffs Paek assists on the game winning goal in game four of the Stanley Cup finals against the Chicago Blackhawks. Paek's career was at it peek.

In 1993 Paek only appeared in 41 games and fell out of favor with then Penguins coach Scotty Bowman. Paek didn't last another season with the Penguins. He was traded to the Los Angeles Kings as part of a deal that brought Winger Tomas Sandstrom to Pittsburgh. He finished that season with the Kings playing in the teams final 29 games. Paek and the Kings went to the Stanley Cup finals that year but lost to Montreal in the finals.

In the off season, Paek's services were called apon by the Ottawa Senators. Paek produced for the Senators in 42 games he registered 12 points on a terrible Senators team. The following year Paek found himself playing for Minnesota and Houston of the IHL. Ottawa was the last time Paek saw NHL action.
