Jacoby Jones: The next Devin Hester?

It is only the third week of the preseason, but Houston Texan WR/PR Jacoby Jones is looking very promising as a return man. In three preseason games Jones, the 23-year old rookie out of Lane, has caught 8 passes for 105 yards, and a TD. Jones has only had 5 punt returns, but two of which he has returned for TD's. In week 2 of the preseason against the Cardinals, Jones fielded one punt, which he returned 80 yards for a TD. The following week against the Texans in-state rivals, the Cowboys, Jones fielded 2 punts and returned one of them for 91 yards and a TD. So far this preseason I think Jones has been the most exciting player, if not, then at least the most exciting return-man. Jones can also be used for trick plays, he has ran the ball twice on end-arounds for 34 total yards. Jones has already earned his spot on the team at WR, and PR.

Jones is just a bigger version of Hester. Hester is a 5'11", 189 pound DB turned wideout, while Jones is a 6'2" 210 pound wideout/PR. Last year, no one expected Hester to make an immediate impact, many people didn't even think he would make an impact as a playmaker at all. I think Jones could make a big statement, and make a run for the ROY award, by the end of the season he could be the number two WR, and have a Marques Colston-like surprise rookie season.

I have a huge problem deeming a Punt Return man as a great break through during the preseason. Typically the starting special teams unit only plays 1 maybe 2 series in a preseason game. That means that the punt coverage teams are young guys who are fighting to make a spot on the rsoter so all they are doing is flying around the field and trying to kill someone rather than showing some dicipline.

Also, once people cotton on to the fact he is a good returner, they will simply decide to punt out of bounds.

They never did that to Hester, or Dante Hall.

If they think the guy is a big enough threat they will angle it out and just make him move and corner him. Thats what pretty much ended Hall's streak. Hester will be interesting to see how he reacts this year.

I think that as of right now we can only look at it as preseason success. I hope he does turn out to be electric, it really brings better "drama" to the game when you have someone who can break something open, but lets just remember that the Raiders were undefeated in last years preseason. I hope he becomes a stud, but as of right now I am not going to hold my breath.

Bloom doesn't even look healthy enough to be on the field, and opening day is right around the corner.
