Bob was widely regarded as one of the top fighters in the NHL during his playing career.

During his playing days with the Pittsburgh Penguins his entry onto the ice would be accompanied by the Civic Arena organist playing the song Anchors Away My Boy, in recognition of his nickname "Battleship."
