J.R. Tolver (Gregory D. Tolver) was born on January 13, 1980 in Long Beach, California. After going to high school at Mira Mesa (San Diego, CA), Tolver attended San Diego State University. Tolver made his professional debut in the NFL in 2003 with the Miami Dolphins. He played for the Miami Dolphins for his entire 1 year career.

Throughout the 13 games of his final season with the Aztecs, Tolver led his team in overall receiving, finishing the season with 128 catches for 1785 yards and 13 touchdowns which calculates to be an astounding 13.9 yards per catch and 137.3 receiving yards per game…Also registered six rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown…Led his team in points (86)…Played in the 2003 East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco and was invited to the Hula Bowl…Tolver was a unanimous selection to the all-Mountain West football team and was named to a pair of All-America teams after leading the nation with 137 receiving yards per game and finishing second nationally with nearly nine catches per contest…Named MWC Football Player Of The Week three times, the first after a 12 catch, 296 receiving yard performance against Arizona State (13th best receiving game in NCAA history).
2001 - (San Diego State)
Easily led San Diego State with 63 catches for 878 yards and two touchdowns...He also more than doubled the next highest Aztec in receiving yards and his 878 were more than one-third of the team total...Had a monster day at Utah with 11 receptions for 140 yards... Grabbed eight passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns against Eastern Illinois...Was involved in plays covering at least 30 yards in seven games...Was third in the Mountain West in receptions per game (5.73) and receiving yards for all games (80)...His lone kick return for the season went for 33 yards at Arizona State...Went over 100 receiving yards in three games (Air Force, Eastern Illinois and Utah).

Started all 11 games and finished as SDSU's leading receiver...Hauled in 62 passes for 808 yards, a 13.0 yards-per-catch average... Finished with no fewer than six receptions in 8-of-11 games...Ranked 40th nationally in receiving yards per game (73.5) and 31st in the nation in receptions (5.6).

The Aztecs' starting wide receiver in the final two games of the season...Finished the year with nine receptions for 101 yards (11.2 avg.) and two scores.
