Born on July 26, 1922 in Huntersville, North Carolina, Hoyt Wilhelm (James Hoyt Wilhelm) played for the New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers over the course of his 21 year career. Wilhelm broke into the bigs on April 18, 1952 with the New York Giants, and put up a 2.43 ERA in 159.1 innings pitched in 1952, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Hoyt Wilhelm's best season was 1964, when he posted a 1.99 ERA, won 12 games, notched 27 saves and struck out 95 batters.
