How Wrong Am I? (NFC Edition)

16

by Oh No Romo

NFC East (Predictions)

Philadelphia Eagles 12-4

New York Giants 9-7

Washington Redskins 8-8

Dallas Cowboys 7-9

NFC East (Through Week Eight)

Dallas Cowboys 6-1

New York Giants 6-2

Washington Redskins 4-3

Philadelphia Eagles 3-4

Thoughts: It's a little out of order right now, but if the Eagles can win nine straight, I think I'll be okay. The Giants are doing great, but they can they hold on? Romo's boys are doing freakin awesome, but we need to wait and see how they do in the second half. This division looks really good right now and I think we are due for exciting times.

NFC North (Predictions)

Chicago Bears 11-5

Green Bay Packers 9-7

Minnesota Vikings 7-9

Detroit Lions 5-11

NFC North (Through Week Eight)

Green Bay Packers 6-1

Detroit Lions 5-2

Chicago Bears 3-5

Minnesota Vikings 2-5

Thoughts: The Packers are playing great so far this season. If the running game can improve, I think the Pack win the division. The Lions really made a statement against the Bears on Sunday. They Lions could win 10 games this season. As for the Vikings, ADRIAN PETERSON!!! Enough said.

NFC South (Predictions)

New Orleans Saints 13-3

Carolina Panthers 8-8

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7-9

Atlanta Falcons 4-12

NFC South (Through Week Eight)

Carolina Panthers 4-3

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 4-4

New Orleans Saints 3-4

Atlanta Falcons 1-6

Thoughts: This is a crapshoot between the three top teams. The Falcons are done, obviously.

NFC West (Predictions)

San Francisco 49ers 10-6

St. Louis Rams 10-6

Seattle Seahawks 9-7

Arizona Cardinals 6-10

NFC West (Through Week Eight)

Seattle Seahawks 4-3

Arizona Cardinals 3-4

San Francisco 49ers 2-5

St. Louis Rams 0-8

Thoughts: What can I say? Seriously, what? This division confuses me. I am so wrong about this division. I don't know what it looks like to you guys, but I don't think anybody wants to win the NFC West.

Yeah, I never understood why people talked about the Rams as Super Bowl contenders. I saw a lot of predictions with them winning the NFC. I never got that. Bulger's not that good, and now they'll be WAY overpaying him for a long time. Their defense still totally reeks, and we now see that they can't do diddly squat without Stephen Jackson. Not that I expected the Cowboys to be GREAT, but I can't believe you picked the Cowboys to finish last, going 7-9, while the Rams went 10-6. WAY off on those two.

The Vikings are probably the best team with a losing record in the NFC. If they get a decent QB, and a serviceable TE/Slot Wr, they're in the playoffs.

not even encessarily a good one of eitehr. Just players that can, you know, actually be called a starter without being embarassed

I'd have to go with the Saints as the best sub-500 team in the NFC, with the Vikes a close second.

Yeah, I don't totally disagree with you saying the Vikings, because they're a piece or two from being good. But, I'd have to agree with Tyler on the Saints, because they have the pieces to win NOW. They got off to a bad start playing conservative ball and got SPANKED in the first three weeks (lost by an average of almost 22). But, they've now won 3 of their last 4, with Brees finally getting his first 300-yard game. Also, after having their top receiver held to 70 or fewer yards in the first three games, the Saints have had a 100-yard receiver in 3 of the last 4. Look for them to have a big second half, with games remaining against the Rams, Texans, Falcons, Cardinals, Eagles and Bears. Their second-half components currently have a combined 22-37 record, and only two opponents (Jaguars and Panthers) have winning records.

Sorry, I said "components" when I meant to say "opponents."

as soon as the Saints get back to .500, I'll agree, but untill then, they're still akin to the Jets (i.e. one year wonders)

Calling them one-year wonders is a very loose comparison. The Saints are 3-4 while the Jets are 1-7. The Saints are in a much weaker division, giving them a much better chance to make the playoffs where they can start with a clean slate. The Saints have played a tougher schedule so far, as their opponents have a record of 23-20, compared to the Jets opponents' 29-30 record. That includes TWO losses to Buffalo and a loss to Cincinnati. Their only win so far came against the Dolphins. AND, again, that's in a tougher division and a tougher conference.

I do not think the two are comparable. It's too early to call either a one-year wonder, especially when one is one game below .500 while the other is 1-7.

I've also gotta say that the Jets last year were threading a thin needle. They came away with the same record as the Saints, but the Saints dominated many of their opponents, while the Jets escaped with six of their 10 victories being by 8 points or less. One play goes the other way in some of those games, and they're easily in exactly the position they're in this season. Only 4 of the Saints' 10 wins were by 8 points or less last year. AND, they had a playoff victory, where the Jets were one and done against the Pats. I don't think the two teams are comparable.

I don't usually like to hype games or anything, but the two week stretch when the Packers play the Lions and Cowboys back-to-back (both Thursday games by the way) at the end of November could be the two biggest games in the NFC this year. Something to watch for as your calendar pages turn this week.
