The fourth overall pick in the 1996 NPB Draft, Hiroki Kuroda has spent the last decade making a name for himself as Mr. Complete Game. In a six year period (1999-2005), Kuroda lead the Central League in complete games. And to top it off, he won the League's ERA title in 2006.
After the 2006 season, Kuroda, then 31, had the opportunity to leave Japan as a free agent and enter Major League Baseball. However, after rebuffing both American teams (such as the Chicago Cubs) and Japanese suitors (Hanshin Tigers), Kuroda inked a four year, $10.4 million extension with the Carp. That contract allowed him to opt out after the 2007 season, leaving the chance that he'll make his MLB debut in 2008 at age 33.

Kuroda's throws four pitches -- a fastball that peaks in the mid 90s; a slider; a forkball that scrapes the high 80s; and a fastball/sinker/slider combo called a "shuuto" in Japan. Critics assert that Kuroda relies too much on his fastball; however, when he can locate it, he is a true ace. He projects, on the high side, to be a middle of the rotation starter in the Major Leagues, with others (such as Mike Pagliarulo) suggesting that he is a given to put up an ERA above 5.00.
