Martina Hingis, the 25-year-old Swiss player who spent three years off the pro tour with injuries, won her first pro tournament since unretiring in January.
Hingis beat Dinara Safina 6-2, 7-5 to win the Italian Open, giving her 41 career titles. She had a hard road to the championship in Italy, having to beat Venus Williams to reach the finals. She beat Williams 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 to improve her lifetime record against Venus to 11-10.
The Italian Open is largely considered a warm-up for the French Open, which begins Sunday. Hingis has won every Grand Slam but Roland Garros over the course of her career.
