Two days after being designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays, 1B Shea Hillenbrand (.301 avg., 12HR, 39RBI) has a new home. Hillenbrand was acquired by the San Francisco Giants following their 8-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. The Jays sent pitcher Vinnie Chulk (1-0, 5.25 ERA) with Hillenbrand to the Bay in exchange for 24-year-old pitcher Jeremy Accardo (1-3, 4.91 ERA).
Hillenbrand was designated for assignment by the Jays after he wrote "the ship is sinking" on the clubhouse bulletin board, following which Jays manager John Gibbons challenged Hillenbrand to a fight.
The Blue Jays are 54-42, 5.5 games behinds the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox, and 2 games behind the New York Yankees. The Giants are 51-46, and just a half game behind the San Diego Padres in the NL West.
