The Haas Pavilion (formally Walter A. Haas, Jr. Pavilion) is the home of the University of California, Berkeley's basketball and volleyball teams. The pavilion stands at the site of the historic Harmon Gym, which was built in 1933 and subsequently renovated into its current state from 1997 to 1999 after the generous donation of Walter A. Haas, Jr. of Levi Strauss & Co. When it was constructed, the University intended for the pavilion to provide a close, intimidating atmosphere, including the elimination of any sound-proofing devices, which has led to the pavilion being named one of the most intimidating arenas in the Pacific 10 Conference. The arena is especially known for its seating area known as The Bench, a courtside section that holds approximately 900 rowdy student fans.
