Four years removed from being named of the U.S.'s top amateur athletes, Greg Louganis was a favorite to medal at the Seoul Olympics. However, on his ninth preliminary dive of 11, cracked the back of his head open as he springboard, and flopped into the pool dazed if not unconscious. Louganis returned within the hour, after receiving stitches, and won a gold later those Games.
