Gordy Soltau (Gordon Leroy Soltau) was born on January 25, 1925 in Duluth, Minnesota. After going to high school at Central (Duluth, MN), Soltau attended the University of Minnesota. Soltau made his professional debut in the NFL in 1950 with the San Francisco 49ers. He played for the San Francisco 49ers for his entire 9 year career.

Most people believe that 1951 was Gordy Soltau's best year, as he hauled in 59 receptions, had 826 receiving yards and caught 7 TD passes.
