Glavine Showing Bravery Through Vulnerability

by user Ross K.

By now almost all sports fans have read that New York Mets starting pitcher Tom Glavine's season is in question because of a mysterious ailment in the ring finger of his pitching hand.

Glavine is to undergo medical exams to find out what is causing the problem - which Glavine explains as coldness - the most likely suspect is a blood clot.

What hasn't been discussed is that Glavine should be commended for the fact that he was not too bull-headed to tell his trainer, manager, whomever it was that he was having this problem.

The Mets are in first place in the NL East. They have already lost Pedro Martinez to the DL and there have been some other questions popping up about the strength to the team.

A lot of players - or I should say, a lot of us men - would have shrugged off the weird feeling and kept on pitching, ignoring the problem until someone saw us grimmacing and beat it out of us.

Many have said if Glavine is lost for the season, so are the Mets. That's a lot of pressure on Glavine to hide his his injury and "take one for the team." However he did the right thing and put his health, his family and the rest of his career over being a manly man and told the people he needed to tell what was wrong.

Showing that vulnerability isn't a sign by weakness was a brave move for Glavine and one that should be remembered by Mets fans (and all MLB fans) should the Mets suffer in Glavine's absence.

Before whomever it was that jumped all over me before does it again, I use the term brave in this article in a relative sense.

The Mets also lost Victor Zambrano because he didn't tell the team about his arm pain. So this rings very true.

i disagree...this happened to David Cone when he was on the Yankees...any time finger numbness is involved, any smart person would realize this could be a pretty serious problem

Well, there's a reason that Glavine has pitched for 19 full seasons, and Dravecky only pitched for six full seasons (followed by three seasons totalling just 27 appearances). I have to agree with AF - keeping yourself in good health isn't so much bravery as it is just good common sense.

My point though is that it's a lot easier for someone on the Royals or Devil Rays to say something is wrong than a key player on a playoff team (especially one in NY)

ASwaff, thanks for jumping to conclusions. I wasn't comparing Dravecky to Glavine career-wise... Since it 'was before your time' Dave Dravecky had a blood clot that gave him tingling in his fingers, had surgery to 'fix the problem' then broke his arm while pitching and doctors found he had cancerous tumors in his shoulder THEN he had to have his pitching shoulder & ARM amputated.

Stats don't tell the whole story... so good job bringing stats into it.

Tom's health is WAY more important than anything the game asks of him.

Thanks for the back story and the condescending arguments, but I didn't think you WERE comparing them career-wise. MY point was that it's just smart to take care of yourself. My point was that Glavine has been healthy for his entire career, and it's because he takes care of himself instead of doing what some guys do, and trying to pitch through injuries. I'm just pointing out that I don't know that it's so much bravery as just common sense to say, "I've got tingling in my fingers and I need to check it out."
