Glavine Finally Collects No. 296

After winning only 4 out of their last 18 games, Tom Glavine and the New York Mets knew that they had to do something in order to stay on top of the division lead, as they took on the the Oakland A's with Tom Glavine searching for his 296th win for his sixth straight start. Glavine needed to bring his "A" games against the "A's" and indeed he did. The final score was 9-1, and they won mainly because of him, due to the fact that the A's had so many errors during that game.

Glavine did it all in this game, as he pitched a gem (1 earned run in 8+ innings), and managed to drive in two runs with two hits that day as well, but he had the misfortune of being thrown out at the plate in the sixth inning after his second hit, a single, had produced the final two runs in a five-run rally that all but determined the outcome. Tom Glavine put the Mets in a frame of mind they have rarely experienced since all of this losing began on June 1.

As Glavine got closer and closer to getting his first win in over a month, Mets fans and players were even happier. It seems like Tom Glavine is a key factor on how the Mets play. Ever since he won that last game in May, it seems like the Mets have been in a downfall. Now that he has won, I guess we'll see if he indeed DOES play a major part on whether the Mets keep their division lead or not.

I think that the Mets have lost more than 4 out of their last 18, but I'm not sure of the whole number so I won't edit it.

This win may be the win the Mets needed to wake them up. They try today to win two games in a row for the first time this month.

Glavine should have had 300 by now with the lack of run support he's gotten in the past. He'a a heavy influence. If he wakes up, so will the Mets.

It's not just run support that he needed. He's done pretty bad for himself as well.

Glavine may wind up being the last of the 300 game winners unless Randy Johnson can find a way to stay healthy. With no 20 game winners last year it looks like it will be harder to have fifteen 20 win seasons or twenty 15 win seasons.

Johan has 85 wins and is 28 years old, so I doubt that he's gonna do it, unless he's a 20+ game winner throughout the rest of his career. If HE can't do it, then who can? He wasted about 3 years as a reliever, I think.

Glavine's ability to get to 300 shows that you need to be not only good, but consistently ready and healthy. As for potential 300 game winners, Bonderman's got 53 wins at 24, so he's on pace to be a possibility so long as he keeps improving. Sabathia will be 27 at the end of the year and will most likely have 100 wins, so he might have a shot as well. However it is gonna start being out of reach soon.

Roger has gotten up to (almost) 350, so I think the reports of the "death of the 300 win pitcher" has been greatly exaggerated. Sure it might be a while for the next one, but it wasn't like it was an every year thing anyway. If it was, might not be such a big deal then!
