Born on September 8, 1978 in Lafayette, Louisiana, Gil Meche (Gilbert Allen Meche) played for the Seattle Mariners for his entire 6 year career. Meche broke into the bigs on July 6, 1999 with the Seattle Mariners, and put up a 4.73 ERA in 85.2 innings pitched in 1999, his rookie year.
There is some disagreement on what was Gil Meche's most productive season. Some believe that it was 2003, when he posted a 4.59 ERA, won 15 games and struck out 130 batters. However, others believe that it was 2006, when he posted a 4.48 ERA, won 11 games and struck out 156 batters.
Meche signed with the Royals as a free agent before the 2007 season. His uniform number is a reference to his contract with the team ($55 million over 5 years).
