Gil English (Gilbert Raymond English) was born on July 2, 1909 in Glenola, North Carolina. He made his Major League debut on September 20, 1931 for the New York Giants. In 1932, his rookie year, he hit .225 with 2 home runs and 19 RBI. English played for the New York Giants, Detroit Tigers, Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers over the course of his 6 year career.

Most people believe that Gil English's best season was 1937, when he hit for a .284 average.
