Giambi and the Senator

Although I am not a big fan of baseball, especially now in the "Cartoon Era", I applaud Jason Giambi's decision to meet with Senator George Mitchell.

"Today, I have agreed to Commissioner Selig's request that I meet with Senator George Mitchell," said Giambi in a statement. "In a direct conversation the Commissioner impressed upon me the idea that the game of baseball would be best served by such a meeting. I will continue to do what I think is right and be candid about my past history regarding steroids. I have never blamed anyone nor intended to deflect blame for my conduct. I alone am responsible for my actions and I apologize to the Commissioner, the owners and the players for any suggestion that they were responsible for my behavior."

Giambi is breaking ranks and will be the first active player to talk to the commission looking at steroids in baseball. He will probably get the ire of other players, but I think that it is a positive step in bringing the "Cartoon Era" to a close.

Giambi's testimony is not voluntary, and the statement was written by his attorney. No reason to "applaud" anything, other than this is the beginning of the end hopefully in getting steriods out of the game, and also Barry Bonds.

It was still his decision, no matter if he was directed by his attorney or forced by Selig.

Bud Selig: Jason, you will testify in front of George Mitchell's group investigating steriod use in baseball.

Jason Giambi: No *#@* way! And you can't make me.

Bud Selig: Oh, yeah? You will testify or you will never play another major league game again.

Jason Giambi: What time do you want me to meet with him?

Probably true, but he still could have said, "No!"

Erooster, I don't really understand how you're not seeing that Giambi's statement and meeting with Mitchell was, essentially, coerced. Yeah, he could have said no, but I can't think of many reasonable baseball players who have a possible future in the game who would do so. IMO, this is actually pushing back the likelihood that active players will talk about steroids, because it's showing them that they will then be put in a situation where they will be in a situation either to be coerced into heavy participation with steroids investigation, possibly being encourage to rat out friends and put them in the same situation, or to be forced out of the game.

If you would have read some of my other articles here on ACGM, you would have seen that there is a bit of sarcasm that goes into them. Yes, I know that he was "forced" into the situation. On the other hand, I tire of the tarnishing (as Christof puts it) of MLB. Something has to be done to end this era of cartoon character baseball players. If it takes Giambi to be forced into taking, then I think that it is a good thing.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Nothing will come out of this "meeting".

Just another tarnish to baseball's overall image.

Angela made a good point...why talk when it means a visit to the commissioner's office?
