Giambi Meets with Steroid Investigator

by Romiezzo

Jason Giambi met with George Mitchell on Friday, becoming the first active player known to talk with baseball's steroids investigator. Mitchell and his staff finished interviewing the New York Yankees slugger, and no further meetings were scheduled, a person familiar with the session said on condition of anonymity because the parties agreed not to make any statements other than the release from Major League Baseball.

Commissioner Bud Selig announced the meeting, which took place in New York, but released no details other than who attended. Selig was not present. Giambi had previously admitted he had a "personal history regarding steroids." The New York designated hitter agreed to the session on June 21 after Selig threatened to discipline him if he didn't speak to Mitchell. Last month, Giambi said he wouldn't implicate other players. "I will address my own personal history regarding steroids. I will not discuss in any fashion any other individual," he said. Mitchell, a former Senate Majority Leader, has been investigating steroids since he was hired by Selig in March 2006. Mitchell had no comment on the meeting, one of his assistants said.

Giambi has been sidelined since May 30 because of a foot injury. The New York Yankees do not know when the former AL MVP will be able to play again.

I think Giambi days as a player are over. Hence, he is speaking to Mitchell. Overall, NOTHING will come out of this investigation, except for baseball covering its butt.

Little has been accomplished since I wrote about this in "Giambi and the Senator", http://www.a..._the_Senator, on June 22.

Sounds like Jason Giambi is practicing Mark McGwire's brilliant testimony before Congress.

This is baseball's attempt to pretend it's really being active in combatting steroid use in baseball. If they really want to get tough, develop a test for HGH and administer it with the regularity they do regular drug tests. Then I'll be convinced they've made progress.

This whole incident just shows how much of a joke the investigation has been. I mean seriously if they best that they can do is to bring down the hammer and force Jason Giambi to confess what we already know anyway that is ridiculous. Congress needs to step in again because Selig and the owners are obviously incapable of getting this problem rectified.
