Gerry Werder (Gerald Joseph Werder) was born on August 1, 1894 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After going to high school at Canisius (Buffalo, NY), Werder attended the University of Dayton and the University of Pittsburgh. Werder made his professional debut in the APFA in 1921 with the Tonawanda Kardex. He played for the Tonawanda Kardex for his entire 1 year career.
