George Van Haltren (George Edward Martin Van Haltren) was born on March 30, 1866 in St. Louis, Missouri. He made his Major League debut on June 27, 1887 for the Chicago White Stockings. In 1887, his rookie year, he hit .203 with 3 home runs and 17 RBI. Van Haltren played for the Chicago White Stockings, Brooklyn Wonders, Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Giants over the course of his 17 year career.

Most people believe that George Van Haltren's best season was 1891, when he stole 75 bases, hit for a .318 average and knocked in 83 runs.
