A look at the sports week's biggest losers… by Christof
|
Welcome to the latest edition of the Friday Fryer, where we take a look at who was the sports world's biggest idiot / loser this week. This week, the sports world was rocked by more steroid accusations. It is really sad when I can easily say that my time following professional sports is coming to a close. I simply do not find much fun it anymore. The only thing keeping me interested is the fact that I am still waiting for a Philadelphia sports team to win a championship. One of these days, there will be a new author to this column. At that point, you know, I have given up on pro sports. So without further ado, let’s go take a look at our three finalists and, of course, the person or team who is being dipped into the Fryer....
THE FINALISTS
| Miami Dolphins
|
| Miami sits with a record of 0 wins and 9 losses. With the St. Louis Rams winning last week, the Dolphins are the only NFL team without a victory. Isn’t it ironic that the Dolphins may go through an entire season without a victory during the same season when another team joins the Dolphins as going through a season without a single loss?
It is truly sad how such a great franchise has fallen so far. There has been a coaching turnstile down in Miami since the great Don Shula retired. This turnstile also extends to quarterback. The Dolphins has yet to fill the shoes left behind by Dan Marino.
Things are only going to get worse for Miami before they get better. Just think, the return of Ricky Williams is only days away. Nonetheless, this mess earns the Miami Dolphins a Friday Fryer nomination.

| Miami Heat
|
| Sticking with the Miami sucks theme a little longer; what is up with the Miami Heat? A pre-season Eastern Conference contender has started the new NBA season with a record of 1 win and 7 losses. I guess the good news for the Heat is that they have one more win than the Dolphins.
The worse thing about the heat situation is the outlook. Shaq looks like he has already retired. D. Wade is missing in action. Pat Riley does not have look to have the answers.
The NBA season is still young, but the Heat is really playing terribly. For this, the Heat earn the City of Miami a second Fryer nomination this week.

| Dallas Cowboys
|
| This has been a big week in professional sports in regards to the use of steroids. In a scandal that is only to get worse, current and former Dallas Cowboys players have been named in a steroids case.
This week, David Jacobs, gave a list of names of people he gave steroids to federal investigators. This list includes current players on the Dallas Cowboys team. The question is not if, but when these names will be released to the press.
Should it occur during this season, you can almost be assured that the Cowboys, as a team, will go into the tank. If it happens after the season, heads will roll. Just imagine this scenario, the Cowboys shock the world and win the Super Bowl, only for it to come out right afterward that the team was filled with steroid abusing players. Really, this would make the NFL just like the MLB. Speaking of which….

AND THE LOSER IS . . .
| Barry Bonds
|
| The new baseball home run king was indicted this week by a federal grand jury for perjury and obstruction of justice. What could Barry have lied about? If you guess his steroid use, you would be correct!
Lets face it; Bonds use of steroids comes as no surprise. Just look over the photos of Bonds during his career, and you see a drastic change in appearance. This drastic change also correlates with a drastic increase in Bonds home run statistics.
What the indictment does do is bring home the fact that baseball, both owners and players, sold out the game’s soul. We all know that baseball was hurting right after the 1994 Strike. Instead of rebuilding slowing and correctly, baseball went for the quick fix – increase home run hitting. But to do this would require the use of performance enhancing drugs. So folks who should have been saying no were instead turning their heads away, and pretending nothing was going on.
The result? Well, baseball has lost a lot of its credibility. For Barry Bonds? He was a Hall of Fame player without ever needing a single shot of steroids. Now? He will likely fall in the category of Pete Rose. Mark these words, if Barry Bonds is found guilty and pleads guilty to these charges, he will be banned from the Baseball Hall of Fame.
So Barry, I wonder, was it really worth it? Was the record worth it, at the cost of your integrity and the game’s? But at least your actions earn you a Friday Fryer Chair award.
Until next Friday, AMF!
