a look at the sports week's biggest losers
by Christof

Welcome to another edition of the Friday Fryer, where we take a look at who was the sports' world's biggest idiot this week. Without further ado, let's go take at our three finalists and, of course, the person or team being dipped into the Fryer....

THE FINALISTS
Hyping Hurricane Katrina and the New Orleans Saints
You know, I am tired of hearing about hearing how the Saints have helped New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina. First, New Orleans currently has only about half of the population as it did before the hurricane struck. And you know what, I don’t see the Saints winning bringing back many residents. Second, Mr. Benson, owner of the Saints, did almost everything possible to move the team out of New Orleans last year. People tend to forget that little fact, but if they remember, the hype would have to end.

Third, I do not really think the NFL cares one lick about New Orleans, beyond the potential public relation black eye that would have resulted if the Saints had fled the city. So all of this hype about the Saints, I feel, has more to do with ratings, then what is reality. For playing off of emotions resulting from one of the worse natural disasters this nation has ever seen gets a nomination for this week’s Friday Fryer Chair.

Michael Vick
The coach killer may be turning into a career-killer for himself! Vick, a.k.a. Ron Mexico, a.k.a. the Atlanta Falcons quarterback with the $137 million contract found himself in trouble while boarding a plane this week. Seems like Vick had a water bottle that he did not want to give up to security. I guess Vick have not heard about the potential terrorist plots to blow up a plane with carry-on items and the resulting increase in security at airports.

Anyway, Vick made a fuss about giving up his water bottle. He did finally throw it away, however, a security agent went and checked out the bottle. The security agent discovered that the water bottle had a secret compartment and that he smelled like weed.

So now Vick may have a drug possession charge filed against him. But hey, at least he did not give anyone herpes this time, right? Nonetheless, Vick gets a nod in this week’s Fryer.

San Diego Chargers
The Chargers were the most complete team in the NFL regular season this year. Physically, they were a much better team than the New England Patriots last Sunday. Mentally, however, they were not. And because of stupid mental mistakes, the Chargers were sent packing to an early exit from the playoffs.

I have see teams mentally self-destruct before, especially in a playoffs setting. So what the Chargers did was not a first. Sure, the order of mistakes may have been unique. You know – stupid personal foul penalties; fumbling a punt and instead of just falling on it, tries to pick it up and forgets to get control of the ball, intercepting a ball on fourth down and deciding to advance the ball instead of falling down, when your team HAS the lead.

Anyway, the Patriots did not as much win the game last week as the Chargers blew it. For their effort, or lack thereof, the Chargers earned a Friday Fryer nomination.

AND THE LOSER IS . . .

Philadelphia sports teams on 1/13/06

Last Saturday, three professional sports teams and six Division I-A men basketball teams from Philadelphia played game. In those nine games, only one team from Philadelphia won. For that great effort, Philadelphia teams who played last Saturday get the Friday Fryer Chair this week.

Lets do a quick review. Both the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers lost regular season games. This does not come as a surprise, for the Flyers have by far the worse record in the NHL, while the Sixers have the second worse record in the NBA. As this long winter of losing hits its full stride, the losing by the Flyers & Sixers are not surprising, it is when they win that surprises.

Next up was the Philadelphia Eagles, who lost to the New Orleans Saints Saturday night. The good news is that the Eagles actually made the playoffs without their star quarterback and a defense that needs to rebuild its linebackers’ unit. The team also won a playoff game this year. The day news, however, is that the Eagles faced a Saints team that was 1. at home, 2. well rested. And that, my friends, was too much to overcome.

So lets move to the college basketball ranks. Yes, Philadelphia is home to the Temple Owls, LaSalle Explorers, Drexel Dragons, Villanova Wildcats, St. Joseph’s Hawks and the Penn Quakers. Last Saturday, all six teams were in competition. Unfortunately, only the Penn Quakers won.

You know how bad it is when there were nine games involving Philadelphia teams, and the only win to show for the efforts was from an Ivy League basketball game? Well, it is bad. Real bad. And for that, Philadelphia teams get the Friday Fryer award for this week.

Until next Friday, AMF!

Fry 'em all!!!

Kudos on calling the New Orleans situation as it is. Serious Kudos, I am so sick of "America's Team" getting tossed around. But so goes the mass media, they can't come up with anything good or original.

Vick won't be prosecuted for possession, he had less than 20 grams which only gets him a misdemeanor & fine in Fla., and apparently is more trouble than it's worth paperwork-wise. It will get him in hot water with the NFL's behavior policies, however.
