Frank Thomas -- First Ballot HOF

11
Vote

by user Joebook

Frank Thomas should be a first ballot HOF pick. During the 90s, he was the premier right-handed power hitter, and put up numbers not achieved by many in baseball history. Let's examine his resume:

-- Thomas is one of two players in MLB history (Ted Williams) to begin his career with eight consecutive seasons of 20HR, 100RBI, 100BB, 100R... and that includes the 1994 strike season, when Thomas only played 113 games.

-- Coming into this season, he had 448 home runs, and has 23 through August 5 this year... his AB/HR rate of 15.5 is 23rd in history, better than Aaron, Mays and Gehrig.

-- Thomas has two MVP awards, and was cheated out of a third in 2000 by Jason Giambi, who used performance enhancing drugs. 28 players have won two or more MVP awards, but only eight have won three or more.

-- His .425 career OBP ranks him 13th in history, and he's accumulated 1519 walks, good for 14th on the alltime list.

-- His .991 career OPS puts him at #11 and he sits at #15 on the career slugging list.

-- If he can stay healthy, he'll reach 500 HR next season, along with 1600 RBI and 1600 BB. Only Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth and Mel Ott are members of that club.

For those who are big anti-steroid guys, Thomas was one of the best players in his generation who was never accused of steroid use. Frank was a tight end at Auburn, and was always a large man. He did things the right way, with hard work and dedication. He'll never be known as a great defensive player, and more recently, injuries have relegated him almost exclusively to the DH role, but he was the most feared right-handed hitter of his time and deserves his ticket punched on the first ballot.

Keep in mind, he's still racking up numbers...

He is a Hall of Famer, however, I doubt he will enter the Hall on the first ballot. It will take some time before the Big Hurt enters the Hall, once he is eligible.

Are you suggesting that Thomas has (without a doubt) never used performance enhancing substances? I think that every big power hitter from the 90's should be suspected.

Agreed. Not that he ever used them - but that he cannot categorically be cleared from all doubt.

he's a borderline first ballot guy, but I wouldn't have a problem if he did go on his first try...injuries have dampened his numbers a tad.

Agreed completely... he was the 2nd best hitter of the 90s behind Bonds.

I'd put Griffey 3rd strictly as a hitter... overall I'd put Griffey as #2 in the 90s just behind Bonds.

Close call - I'd say Griffey was a better hitter in the 90's than Thomas. I'd put Thomas third.

Griffey hands down was the finest hitter of the 90s, Thomas 2nd, then Bonds, on my list.

He's a HOF, but he may get in on the 2nd try.

Whether he gets in on the first ballot could largely depend on who's on the ballot with him, but I agree he is Hall-worthy. Thomas and Ken Griffey Jr. are the only premier sluggers from the 90s that haven't fallen under the cloud of suspicion as it relates to steroids, and I think the perception of cleanliness could help Thomas' case.

He is definitely a HOF'er and probably a 1st balloter, but let's not get too carried away here. He's not an all-time great. He is simply a very good player when viewed in the context of his own era.

Yeah, well in Little League I knew a kid who had the most RBI's in Thursday night games after the 4th inning in the entire league!

But other than that, good article.

So apparently, that means nothing? Those are incredible numbers to put out at the start of a career. Not many guys come out of the minors with a great eye like that.

Big Hurt will go to The Big Hall.

The 'first ballot' Hall of Fame debate is ridiculous. How can you be good enough to be a Hall of Famer, yet NOT deserve it in your first year of eligibility? Do you somehow get better afetr your first year of voting? The HoF voters are stupid. It's NOT their job to make statements or qualified judgements by withholding votes.

People need to stop treating the Hall of Fame like it's some super-exclusive club. The people who want to limit the membership are the same people who will demand Derek Jeter be put in... so there. Make a 'Super Hall of Fame' if you gotta...

It would only be fitting that Thomas and Bagwell get inducted in the same year (can we arrange that?) Since they share so many things already (birthdate for instance) - Even though I personally don't see Bagwell as a Hall of Famer

I agree with J Cunningham, 1st ballot will usually depend on who else is up for election that year. And I believe the first 8 seasons statistical comparison to Ted Williams is a meaningful group of numbers and doesn't seem like an arbitrary baseball 'three-run home runs on Sept afternoons in the rain' stat to me

Throw in these numbers too: From 1991-1997 - that's 7 straight seasons - Frank Thomas finished in the top 4 in the Major League's in VORP. 1st (94), 2nd (91, 92), 3rd (95, 96), 4th (93, 97). That's pretty darn good. His later noteable seasons were 9th in 2000 and 18th in 2003.
