False Prophet's 2007 Plan for the Minnesota Twins

10

by user False Prophet

If I were Terry Ryan, here's how I'd look at the team.

Overview and Reflection

The Minnesota Twins are in a good situation. They have a rotation 7 deep for 2008, and 6 deep for this year. They have a young team, as minus Hunter, everyone has a good amount of time left on their contracts and are still young.

Last year, the Twins won the AL Central and lost in the ALDS to Oakland. They had injuries to Torii Hunter, Shannon Stewart. Francisco Liriano, and Brad Radke that kept them from being the clear cut World Series Favorites. They started out rough, but quickly rebounded going on long win streaks from May to July. The offense is great, with The Pirannahs and the killer 3-4-5 stretch of Joe Mauer, Michael Cuddyer, and Justin Morneau.

2006 Report Card

Offense

This team had 2 players to hit 30 HR's and 100 RBI with Michael Cuddyer and Justin Morneau; and if Torii Hunter played a few more games would have made it. Joe Mauer was the MLB batting Champion, and is, IMHO, the most likely to become the 2nd player to hit .400 or better for a season.

Then, their is the Famous Pirannah's; Jason Tyner batting 8th, Jason Kubel Batting 9th, Luis Castillo Batting 1st, and Nick Punto Batting 2nd that even Ozzie Guillen admits is a pain to plan around.

Final Grade: A-

The only problems is the 6 and 7 spot in the lineup, which is not weak, but nothing hard to pitch to. Also, Joe Mauer has to rest every 3rd day, and his replacement Mike Redman is not even close to as good as him.

Defense

This team has Torii Hunter that will play with two smashed legs, and a infield that plays old school baseball.

Final Grade B+

The infield was so healthy, I don't know how deep they are; which is a huge concern for me. Joe Mauer has a knee that if gets smashed will put him out for the year, and that would kill their productivity.

Pitching

Johan Santana was an Ace this year, winning the MLB pitching triple crown this year. Brad Radke was the reliable number two pitcher, but had a stress fracture in his shoulder, ending his season, and his career (he was going to retire at the season's end anyways). The team had a bad begining. Carlos Silva and Kyle Loshe both failed to produce, and Loshe ended up being traded. Scott Baker was a flop, and was replaced by Francisco Liriano, who subsequently was replaced by Matt Garza after his elbow injury. Boof Bonser was a consistant pitcher late, and Silva made somewhat of a Comback.

Final Grade B

The team has 4 spots filled in the rotation, and struggled to produce a steady rotation.

Overall Grade

B+

This team is 2 injuries away from winning the World series, but now is stuck with a pitching problem, and a green farm system.

On to the offseason

Offseason

Find another Pitcher

This is the biggest thing. They have a 4 deep rotation, assuming either Garza or Baker doesn't make it. They have a Southpaw Ace with Santana, then a Bi-Polar pitcher in Silva, followed by 3 second year pitchers. They don't need to go after Barry Zito. In fact, it would be a bad idea, as they are winning off of the "don't pay anything method," but need someone that can help steady over the rotation. I would look at Bruce Chen or Adam Eaton because neither are extremely talented, but both are cheap options.

Don't Screw anything up

A lot of times teams in their situation will pull some stupid trade and try and land some big name player. If they don't do this, things should be Fine.

Trade Prospects

The team has A LOT of pitching prospects, but the rest of their farm teams are a bit dry with good fielders. I think Ryan should trade some Pitching Prospects for some non-pitching prospects in an attempt to get a good set of back ups in place.

Overall

The AL Centeral is tough, but the Twins will win it. You heard it hear first; the Twins are the 2007 World Series Champions.

Expected Lineup and Rotation

Lineup:

  1. Luis Castillo 2B
  2. Nick Punto SS
  3. Joe Mauer C/Mike Redman C*
  4. Justin Morneau 1B
  5. Michael Cuddyer 3B
  6. Torii Hunter CF
  7. Shanon Stewart DH/ Rondell White DH**
  8. Jason Tyner RF
  9. Jason Kubel LF

Nice take.

Although without Liriano, it's gonna be an uphill battle. This team overachieved in 2006. Morneau and Mauer are not going to produce at the same level they did in '06. Morneau hit .237 or something in '05. They are still several pieces away.

But still, nice work.

i dunno, morneau was always a huge prospect -- no reason to think he can't do it again

yeah, i agree . . . to a point.

His 2005 season was one of the most disappointing imaginable. My point is this: Which guy is he? It makes a huge difference to where the Twins end up.

And just so everyone knows - that's nowhere near a World Series.

If Liriano and Radke diddn't go down, they would have won the WS in 3 straight sweeps. Morneau will continue to produce, and if Mauer is healthy, he should repeat last years prductivity. The only question is if Mauers knee holds up or not

Playing the "if" card I see. No way this team gets anywhere near the World Series in 2007. They won't even make the playoffs.

Thats crazy talk. This team has the same pitching staff that carried them down the stretch, and a good Offense

An average offense, at best. And a lot of question marks. Santana is still the best pitcher in the game but Liriano is out, Bonser hasn't proven anything yet, Silva and Loshe are (to put it kindly) inconsistent. Are playoffs out of the question? No. But to proclaim a World Series Championship...c'mon, now.

Average? The Reigning Batting champion, 3 perennial 30 HR/100 hitters, and the Pirannah's? As for pitchers, it would go Santana, Silva, Bonser, Garza, TBD. Bonser was reliable down the stretch, and Garza got a lot better everytime he took the mound. The TBD could be a fA, Scott Baker, or a Minor Leaguer. They have it all in place. It isn't that unbelieveable to believe they could win the WS

There is absolutely no reason to believe that Cuddyer will be able to repeat his career year of '06. Prior to last year, his career high in HR was 12 and his best batting average was .263. That is average at best. Torii Hunter may not even be in a Twin's uni next year. And Morneau has to prove the the '06 version is the real deal, not the '05 version. But I'll give you Joe Mauer. Barring injury, he's the best catcher in baseball. World Series? I still have to say "no".

BTW, who are the three perennial 30HR/100RBI guys?

First, Cuddyer is be the same, as will Morneau. Both of these two drastically improved, and will reproduce. Hunter is signed through next year. Tyner, Kubel, Castillo, and Punto have earned the respect of Managers, and if that isn't enough for you then thats to bad. The three Perennial 30HR/100RBI guys are the two from last year, Morneau and Cuddeyer; and Hunter, who would have joined them if he played a few more games. So according to the logic of an opposing manager, the twins have a lineup with no real holes if they DH Shannon Stewart. (see new section).

Hunter should be traded because if he isn't, he'll walk as a free agent next year and you'll get nothing for him. And don't forget, Morneau hit .237 in 05. Until he produces again, it could be a fluke - although I'm not saying it was. Morneau is a good hitter. Let's just wait to see what he does next year before annointing him. That's all I'm saying.

Hunter Has expressed that he would prefer to stay with the Twins untill they get the new stadium. But what could they get for Hunter that would help?

Pitching prospects are always worth taking a chance on. Look how it worked out when you traded Pierzynski. Liriano and Bonser? Not too shabby.

But to Who? And for Whom? This is the biggest question. Now if you show me that there are a few good prospects on a Team that needs and wants Hunter, I'll reconsider.

i gotta agree with my main man shark on this one...average at best might even be pushing it...those three guys are pretty bad...they might get decent steals, but are not exactly on base machines...this isn't fantasy baseball

What team wouldn't need or want Hunter? Every team in baseball would take him. Probably half of the teams could actually afford him. And every team has pitching prospects. I will give you some more specific scenarios tomorrow when I can do the proper research. I don't have the access right now. But the Dodgers pop to mind immediately. For Chad Billingsley maybe? Or one of their many outfield prospects and a AA pitcher. They have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball.

Cuddyer has never hit 30 home runs. EVER! In fact, he only has 56 career homeruns and he's been around since 2001. Last year he only hit 24. Therefore, he cannot be referred to as a perennial 30 HR guy. Hunter has hit 30 once (last year) but does have a 29 and a 27. But his career average is under .270. Anyhow, I believe he will (and should) be traded - the Twins could get good value back for him. I'm unsold on Morneau. It's not that I don't think he can or will duplicate his 06 performance, it's just that I want to see it happen before I declare he's the real deal. But he certainly could be. Tyner, Kubel, and Punto are nice little players but are not going to instill fear in any major league pitchers. But time will tell.

All right, so switch Hunter with Cuddeyer. He will come close, and make the 100 RBI. As for Tyner, Kubel, and Punto, they aren't supposed to be all star batters, their advantage is they can get on base a lot, and all can steal. Trading Hunter is about the Worst move Imaginable. Who would take him that could afford him and give something in return? The Yankees. And what do they have that the Twins would take? Nothing. How can you call a .326 Batting Avg., .599 Slugging Pct., 34 HR's, and 131 RBI a fluke?

Hunter should be traded because if he isn't, he'll likely walk as a free agent next year and the Twins will get nothing for him. And you seem to be forgetting that Morneau hit only .237 just two years ago. He could be the next great hitter, I agree. But I want to see another productive year before I jump on board.
