Even the best NHLers bounce around

by Laykroyd

If Mark Recchi's NHL career ends in the same city where it began, it won't be by the former Pittsburgh winger's choice.

The NHL's 23rd all-time leading scorer, who cleared waivers Wednesday, is likely to get bought out and signed by another club seeking the kind of veteran leadership that he delivered in Carolina's 2006 Stanley Cup run. Recchi, a two-time Cup winner, has also suited up for the Philadelphia Flyers (on two separate occasions) and the Montreal Canadiens.

Considering the weight of Recchi's accomplishments, that spells out just how unusual it is to play your entire career with one franchise.

Of course, given the right circumstances and salary, many players would love to pull off that feat. Care to guess how many of the NHL's all-time top 100 scorers have done it?

The answer, as of Thursday, December 6, 2007, is 18.

Steve Yzerman (Detroit) Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh) Joe Sakic (Quebec/Colorado) Stan Mikita (Chicago) Gilbert Perreault (Buffalo) Alex Delvecchio (Detroit) Mike Modano (Dallas) Jean Beliveau (Montreal) Bobby Clarke (Philadelphia) Mike Bossy (New York Islanders) Dave Taylor (Los Angeles) Denis Potvin (New York Islanders) Henri Richard (Montreal) Rod Gilbert (New York Rangers) Maurice Richard (Montreal) Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit) Bill Barber (Philadelphia) Yvan Cournoyer (Montreal) Apart from being in the top 100 scorers, what else do these names have in common that could have facilitated their one-franchise status?

The two relevant criteria that jump out first to me are:

1) Winning at least one Stanley Cup. (Exceptions: Perreault, Taylor and Gilbert.)

2) Captaining their club at one time or another. (Exceptions: Bossy and Gilbert.)

I hope Recchi catches on somewhere he has been a great player and deserves to go out on his terms.

Currently Sakic, Lidstrom, Modano and Sundin are all still playing though. I know they've mentioned their interest in retiring as a member of that team, most likely within the next three or four years, but I wouldn't be surprised if they jump ship before they do or if they go out and come back on another team.

The following players are still on the Devils, are entering at least their 10th year on the team, and have won at least 1 Stanley Cup: Sergei Brylin; Ken Daneyko; Martin Brodeur; Patrick Elias; John Madden; Jay Pandolfo; Scott Stevens played for the team for 12 years. He was drafted by Washington, lost to StL who gave up 5 1st rd picks for him in free agency and then involuntarily surrendered to the Devils as compensation for the loss of Brendan Shanahan.

FYI - The Penguins assigned Mark Recchi to their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Pens today. The question now is if he's going to go or not...

As I had commented yesterday, it is a very difficult reality a long-time veteran has to face. After being let go from a team you had enjoyed much success with, the decision would be whether or not to retire or accept the demotion until moved to another team. I hope for Mark Recchi that he finishes out elsewhere since the Penguins no longer want to keep him. I don't think going down the same path as Mike Keane (last I heard, he's playing with the Manitoba Moose) would be in his best interest.

No way in hell would I play for a team called the Manitoba Moose-- shouldn't it be Mooses- what is the plural form of Moose- is it Mooses??? Like when the players go out on the ice are they the Manitoba Mooses or just Moose-- what's a group of Mooses called? Are they a flock of Mooses? What's a baby Moose called? Either way I'd retire.

Who's minusing me for writing about the moose thing??

I did some research We really don't know how to say this so we're just going to say it: The Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League is offering any woman who shaves her head a free ticket to their game on Saturday against the Manitoba Moose. (Terrorists throw down their weapons in disgust, give up).

It's all due to Ms. Britney Spears, of course, who recently shaved her head and promptly entered rehab. The Crunch front office, never one to pass up a good thing, immediately offered Spears "an all-expenses paid trip to Syracuse" to watch as many AHL games as she pleases in "a stress-free environment." We suggested Royals season tickets, but haven't heard back.

This isn't the first time Ms. Spears has been involved in a minor league promotion, by the way.

BY WILL LEITCH'S UNFINISHED NOVEL AT 02/21/07 12:11 PM As a member of the Deadspin, LLP, having Britney as a client in a custody case right now must be simply brutal. Starting out, you figured you would likely roll over KFed like the Germans through France, but every day your client engages in some new behavior to sabotage her case. When my clients do it, they aren't on CNN. KFed, by comparison, has basically been a model citizen since the break-up. And, as trite as this may sound, I really do feel sorry for those kids; the only fortunate thing is they are both too young to know what is going on.

BY PERMANENT4 AT 02/21/07 02:03 PM Royals season tickets!?!?? Will, you will SO rue the day you dissed the Reading side. They'll climb to the top of the Premiership table so fast that even Hirshey's eyes will swim across the... What? You meant K.C.? Oh, okay. Never mind.

BY KID CANADA AT 02/21/07 03:27 PM @Tuffy: Will the stereotype of the rioting Canadian never end?

I would like to see him just retire now. The John Leclaire situation started out like this and it ended up with bad relations. Plus, it is evident that his lack of production is outweighing his leadership abilities. He is one of my favorite players to have gotten the chance to see and I wish he would retire as a Penguin.
