Erik Ainge (Erik Douglas Ainge) was born in Portland, Oregon on June 12, 1986. He is the starting quarterback at the University of Tennessee. His uncle is Danny Ainge, former professional basketball and baseball player, and current general manager of the Boston Celtics.
[edit] High School
In high school, Erik Ainge was named 2003 Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year. He threw for 3,078 yards, 24 touchdowns and 8 interceptions as a senior. As junior, he passed for 2,554 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was also named second-team All-Metro in basketball with 16.4-point average junior season.

In 2004, he started 6 games and set a University of Tennessee freshman record with 17 TD passes. He Threw for 1,452 yards to rank second on UT freshman list. He led Tennessee to victory at No. 3-ranked Georgia in his first career road start. He started Notre Dame game and completed 11-of-18 for 149 yards and one TD before suffering separated shoulder on final play of first half ... Missed final four games due to that injury.
In 2005, he started 5 games and shared QB snaps with senior Rick Clausen throughout the season. He played entire game at Notre Dame, completing 13-of-32 for 187 yards, one TD and two INTs. Erik earned Academic All-SEC honors.
In 2006, Erik started all 12 games and set the Tennessee season record with completion percentage of 67.0. He finished second in SEC passing yards per game (249.1), third in total offense (240.6) and threw 19 TD passes He injured his ankle on Oct. 28 at South Carolina and missed most of LSU and Arkansas contests.

Ainge's father, Doug Ainge, attended Brigham Young University on a basketball scholarship and is currently a basketball coach at Linfield College. His grandfather, Don Ainge, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox; he declined their offer. He also earned a football/basketball scholarship to the University of Oregon in 1954-55. His uncle, Danny Ainge, is a former professional basketball and baseball player who starred in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns, and also played Major League Baseball for the Toronto Blue Jays. Danny is currently the director of basketball operations for the Boston Celtics. Erik's cousin Austin (Danny's son) started at point guard for BYU's basketball team for two seasons.
