Eric Bedard needs a really big hug.

I made the executive decision to watch the Red Sox instead of the second half of the Patriots preseason game ( the first half was plenty entertaining for me). When I officially flipped over from ABC to NESN, it was the top of the eighth inning, with the Orioles ahead, 1-0. It seemed like this would be another one of those games where the Sox got a great pitching performance, but couldn't get any clutch hits. Dice-K and Eric Bedard had gone toe-to-toe for the first 7 innings before I switched over.

The Sox hadn't had a base runner since the fourth. Bedard, who has won seven consecutive starts and leads the American League in strikeouts, led off the inning by striking out Kevin Youkilis. Mike Lowell draws a walk, and Jason Varitek singles. Still one out. Coco Crisp hits a ground ball to Miguel Tejada, who tries too fast to try and turn a double play. He bobbles the ball, then he goes all Julian Tavarez on our asses and rolls the ball to third base for the force out on Lowell. Hell of a play, you'll probably see it on Web Gems. It's now first and second, two outs.

Guess who's up? Mr. Clutch himself, Wilfredo Modesto Pena. He of the .221 average and 19 RBI and, according to my count, 360 strikeouts on the season.

Here's where Bedard needs the hug. I'm not sure if you're all familiar with Major League umpire C.B. Bucknor. Very emphatic with his strikeout motion, has called an inconsistent game every time I've seen him behind home plate, which is where he is tonight.

First pitch to Pena, called strike.

Second pitch, Pena appears to hold up his swing, they appeal to first, he swung. Bedard has an 0-2 count on Pena. Advantage: Bedard.

Third pitch, same deal, Pena holds up, 1-2 count.

Fourth pitch, absolutely crushes the heart of Eric Bedard and every member of his family. It looked like strike 3 to me, a little low and inside, maybe, but good ol' C.B. calls it ball 2. 2-2 count.

Fifth pitch, Bedard hangs one and Pena sends it right up the middle for a base hit. Varitek scores. Tie game.

The Red Sox continue on to score four more runs with 2 outs in the top of the 8th to grab a 5-1 lead. All because of C.B. Bucknor. Over the course of the inning, as various relievers come in and give up base hit after base hit, Bedard literally looks like he is about to cry in the dugout. His eyes are misty, he swallows hard a few times, he looks completely distraught.

And now, I may be about to cry. Eric Gagne has turned into Eric GagMe. 1/3 of an inning pitched, 4 earned runs. The game is tied at 5, so Bedard is now off the hook. Hideki Okajima looks shaky, but he finishes the job without any further damage. In the words of Jerry Remy, "This went from being a pitcher's duel to a complete mess."

This has been one of the craziest baseball games I've watched all year. And to think, I almost watched preseason football during the middle of a pennant race.

i can accept okajima hes been better way better than expected but Gagne come on hes has not had a inning clean with out a base runner and i am very afraid if this happens againest the orioles what happens againest the yankees? we will just hold our breath every time he is out their untill he proves he can pitch in the 8th and with this team.

I don't get it with Gagne. He must have that "must...pitch...in...9th...inning" mentality, which could suck, because that's not what we brought him in for. There's still no way they move Papelbon out of the closer's role.

I had a bad feeling about losing Gabbard, but when I realized we got Eric Gagne I was actually thrilled. I think he's just having a rough week or two. That's all. If he isn't, then what? Maybe HE should be the closer. Think about it. I know that this is taking a big risk, but look at who we're left with next year. Wakefield, Beckett, Dice K, Lester, and then we have four options: Papelbon, Tavarez, calling someone up, or acquiring someone from the free agency or another team. I know Gagne has been with the Sawx for only a couple of weeks, but Epstein and Francona have to decide what they are going to do with him later on.

Great. Now my friend, who thought Bedard was better than Johan Santana, is gonna rub it in the next time I see him.

God I hope so. Can I change the article title, "Eric Bedard, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Megan Cassidy all need a really big hug"? Seriously, this could be one of those benchmark losses. I don't want to panic, and I'm just being really irrational right now, but if we lose the division, this will be the game where the collapse started for me.

Exactly, we can't afford to lose right now. We're going to be facing the red hot Yankees soon, and we need some sort of winning streak in order to keep the division lead. The only way we are going to be safe, most likely, is if we sweep the Yankees, which is going to be very hard to do. NOW, I'm getting worried...

I think every team has had games like that where a late inning meltdown occurs, and everyone portends that collapse is on the horizon. I had to suffer through Ryan Dempster blowing open another close game last week against the Mets, then scoring five runs in a three game sweep by the Astros. At that point the Cubs had lost six of seven, and were going into a buzzsaw in Colorado, where the Rockies had just swept Milwaukee, beating Gallardo in the finale 19-4, and they had won 9 home series in a row.

So what happens? Soriano is out, Ramirez is out, Lou has to create a makeshift lineup that has Jacque Jones, he of the whole TWO homers on the year after hitting 27 last year, and he goes 7 for 10 with 6 RBI in the first two games of the set. Chicago scores sixteen runs on 28 hits and the pitching staff only allows four runs in two games.

Boston will rebound, the pitching staff is too solid to collapse completely, and there is more than enough offense there to right the ship.

Finally, Meg, if you need a hug, let me know...not about to hug Bedard and Dice-K. chuckles

You're right, Silencer. Come to think of it, this is only bullpen collapse we've had all season, with the exception of Paps' two blown saves (we still won one of those games). Thanks for knocking some sense into me. And I will take that hug :)

Glad to be of assistance...;) As a fan of a long suffering franchise, and one that has seen its share of "closers" (Antonio Alfonseca, LaTroy Hawkins, Joe Borowski, Dempster), I know all too well about bullpen issues.

With Okajima, Kirk Snyder, Timlin, Delcarmen, the recently shuttled to the pen Tavarez, Gagne and Papelbon, there are more than enough quality arms to get the outs Francona will need from the pen in order to be successful down the stretch.

One thing that should not be overlooked...even with last night's issues, the bullpen has a Major League-best 2.93 ERA this season. In addition, relievers have converted 33 of 38 save chances, also No. 1 in the Majors.

As for the hug, you got it.  :)

12-4 with a 3.11 ERA is overrated? First, a 3.11 ERA is ok to high? The average AL pitcher has a 4.45 ERA, meaning Bedard is 1.34 runs LOWER than the average. His WHIP is 1.086. Just to review: Bedard in 4th in the AL in ERA, 3rd in winning %, 4th in WHIP, 1st in hits allowed per 9, 1st in K/9 (11.06), 1st in Ks overall (199), 6th in K to BB ratio (3.98:1). I don't think you can say a guy is solely a K pitcher or overrated when you look at the numbers.
