[edit] Biography

Edgerrin Tyree James, also known as The Edge or just Edge, (born August 1, 1978 in Immokalee, Florida) is an NFL player who currently plays running back for the Arizona Cardinals.

[edit] University of Miami career

James was recruited out of Florida's Immokalee High School by the University of Miami. He proved to be one of the most successful running backs in the school's history.

James ranked second in all-time University of Miami rushing yards. He was the only running back in the university's history to post two consecutive seasons with 1000-plus rushing yards, and he ranks first in school history with the most 100-plus rushing games (14). He also holds the University of Miami record for most rushing touchdowns in a season (17). All single season records held by James have since been broken by former Miami and current Buffalo Bills running back Willis McGahee in 2002.

[edit] FHM magazine comments

James was included in a September 2006 FHM article about the success of University of Miami alumni in the NFL, titled: "University of Miami Hit Squad. The Hurricanes are Taking Over the NFL. Deal with It."

In the article, James said: "We have a little slogan at UM. When you leave the locker room, you say you're going to "hit, stick and bust dick. Then what else? Talk shit."

[edit] Indianapolis Colts

James was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts out of the University of Miami with the fourth pick in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft. He signed a seven-year, $49 million contract. After his first season in the NFL, James was named The NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press.

With the Colts, James had combined with quarterback Peyton Manning and wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne in what many analysts consider the most dominant offense in the history of the NFL. Despite their offensive capabilities, however, the Colts have generally fared poorly in the playoffs and have yet to reach another Super Bowl. In the 2005 season, the Colts won 13 consecutive games during the regular season, only to be eliminated in the divisional round of the playoffs by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

[edit] Arizona Cardinals

James signed a four-year, $30 million deal with the Cardinals on March 12, 2006. He is considered the Cardinals' most significant addition during the 2006 offseason and one of the Cardinals' most significant personnel acquisitions ever.

With the Cardinals, James will be filling the shoes of past running back Emmitt Smith, a likely Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee.

[edit] NFL records

James led the league in rushing during his rookie and sophomore season. He's currently the record holder for most total yards of scrimmage per game in a regular season career.

At 9,226 total yards as a Colt, James holds the Colts' team record for most career total yards rushing.

[edit] Personal

James currently resides in Miami, Florida. He is unmarried and has a daughter.

James established the Edgerrin James Foundation, a charity for underprivileged children and families. In 2000, he donated $250,000 to the University of Miami, which was the largest donation ever made to the university by one of its former athletes until 2007, when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his wife donated $1,000,000 to the school.
