[edit] Biography

Carpenter is the stepson of Tony George, the chairman of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the founder of the Indy Racing League. He first ran in the inaugural Indy Pro Series (now Indy Lights) for Sinden Racing, finishing third points (his current teammate, A.J. Foyt IV, won the championship). His first IPS win came at his home track of Indianapolis, winning the first Freedom 100 race. He finished third again in the series championship. He then graduated to his first series ride at the end of the 2003 season, running the final three races for PDM.

Carpenter's first full IndyCar season, running for Cheever Racing, was disappointing, with a single top 10 (eighth at Kentucky) and finishing 16th in points. In 2005 he moved to his stepfather's team, Vision Racing. A very similar set of results: one top 10 (tenth at Nashville) and 18th in points. At the 2006 season opener at Homestead, Ed was involved in a practice crash that killed Paul Dana, and kept him out of the first two races. Although he only improved to 14th in the standings, he ran in the top 10 on a more regular basis, and had his first top 5 finish at Chicagoland. His results remained stagnant in 2007, finishing 15th.
