Forget about Bill Belichick. Ignore Tiger Woods. Tune out O.J. Simpson. Close your eyes to the Women's World Cup. The biggest story in sports today--perhaps the biggest news story period--is that the Duke University Football Team won a game. Everyone's favorite football loser ended their 22 game losing streak by defeating Northwestern 20-14.
It wasn't easy. Duke managed to score 20 points in the first half, then managed to hold off Northwestern on a final drive to tie or win the game. After the first quarter ended in a 7-7 tie, Duke scored 13 unanswered points to take the lead into the half. They held Northwestern scoreless in the 3rd period as well. Northwestern managed another score in the 4th quarter, but couldn't muster enough scoring against Duke. The Duke defense gave up over 500 yards to the Wildcats but was able to stop them when it mattered.
Thaddeus Lewis threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Blue Devils to their first win since September 17, 2005, when they defeated Virginia Military Institute (VMI). The nation's longest losing streak now belongs to Florida International University, which has dropped 15 straight games.
Duke currently has the same record as former #5 ranked Michigan. With Notre Dame winless and without an offensive touchdown, Duke might actually be favored when the two teams meet on November 17, 2007.
